Arizona
The Arizona Builders Alliance in Scottsdale sponsored a $1,000 scholarship for Arizona high school students. Students created posters, PowerPoint® presentations, and wrote essays promoting construction as a career choice.
Colorado Various construction associations in Colorado hosted a two-day event at Adams County Fairgrounds in Henderson. More than 1,500 high school students experienced hands-on activities and learned about construction careers.
Florida
Santa Fe Community College, Alachua County School Board, FloridaWorks, and the Builders Association of North Central Florida hosted a Careers in Construction Day in Gainesville. More than 200 students watched the Build Your Future video, followed by speakers, exhibits, and hands-on activities.
Lee County School District hosted several "Design & Build Florida" seminars with local professionals discussing the builder's perspective and apprenticeship training. Seminars were given to students at High Tech Central and Cypress Lake High in Fort Myers, Cape Coral and Mariner High in Cape Coral, and East Lee County High in Lehigh Acres.
Citrus County commissioners signed a proclamation declaring October as Careers in Construction Month. Eighth-grade students throughout the school district toured Withlacoochee Technical Institute in Inverness and spoke with current students about construction careers. JEA of Jacksonville sponsored speakers and hands-on activities to bring awareness of construction careers and the affiliation to the utility industry, as well as the importance of education in the workplace.
Lincoln College of Technology in West Palm Beach held several events during Careers Week, including student field trips to the college, a student social, recognition for program instructors, and guest speakers.
The Construction Technology Careers pre-apprenticeship program in Sarasota once again observed October as Careers in Construction Month. County commissioner Paul Mercier issued a proclamation and recognized the event during a commission meeting.
Georgia
The Construction Education Foundation of Georgia distributed 200 Build Your Future DVDs to Suwanee area high schools. The public television station also broadcast the DVD through the educational network.
Lincoln College of Technology in Marietta hosted several events during Careers Week, including a Build Your Future video broadcast, equipment demonstrations, resume workshops, and practice job interviews.
Illinois
Lincoln College of Technology in Melrose Park displayed posters and literature about Careers in Construction Week and invited graduates to speak with current students about the industry.
South Suburban College Building Construction Program and Career Development Systems in Phoenix hosted an open house at a home under construction by the students. Participants received information and spoke to program students and industry professionals about building crafts.
Indiana
Lincoln College of Technology in Indianapolis held several events during Careers Week including a Teacher of the Year award presentation, the Build Your Future video broadcast, an equipment display and demonstration, guest speakers, and resume building and mock interviews for students.
Kansas
As part of their Careers Week activities, Crossland Construction Company created a 12-page "Careers in Construction" activity book for fifth- and sixth-grade students. More than 500 activity books were distributed in southeast Kansas. Supporters included Girard, Frontenac, Northeast Arma, Erie, and Parsons High Schools.
Maryland
Prince George’s Community College Construction and Development Institute in Largo held a Careers in Construction Day. Attendees received information on construction careers from craft professionals, construction managers, and industry leaders. Other supporters included Potomac Electric Power Company, Goodwill of Greater Washington, Express Personnel Services, the Foundation of Automotive Construction Technology for Students, Prince George's County Department of Housing and Community Development, and Maryland National Capital Building Industry Association.

Lincoln Technical Institute in Mahwah held a field trip for local high school students which highlighted careers in construction. They also had guest speakers and a "friends day" for local contractors and construction professionals.
Lincoln Technical Institute in Union held a career fair with local high school students and broadcast the Build Your Future video.
New York
Eastern Monroe Career Center in Fairport sponsored an OSHA 10-hour Safety Outreach for high school students the week of Oct 11-19. Approximately 90 students participated.
North Carolina
Building Future Builders in Asheville scheduled several activities during Careers Week including recognition days for construction educator, employees, and employers and a job shadow day
The Shaw Group, Cleveland Community College, and Duke Energy sponsored a presentation at Cleveland Community College for local high school students in Shelby. The Shaw Group and Isothermal Community College coordinated a presentation and Q&A session highlighting the advantages of construction careers and education opportunities for local high school students in Spindale.
Pennslyvania Constructors Association of Western Pennsylvania, Cleveland Brothers Equipment Company, and the Children’s Museum of Pittsburg sponsored weeklong events at the museum. Children explored construction through presentations and hands-on activities, including building roads, bridges, and buildings to construct a model city.
Rhode Island Lincoln Technical Institute in Lincoln broadcasted the Build Your Future video and held a luncheon for current students, industry representatives, and advisory board members to commemorate the observance of Careers in Construction Week. They also hosted an instructor appreciation luncheon.
South Carolina Thompson Construction Group broadcasted a DVD advocating careers in construction for more than 1,300 Sumter School District 10th-graders. Participating students received a backpack bearing the Thompson logo.
Tennessee Lee Company in Franklin representatives spoke at high schools and provided giveaways for students and instructors. An appreciation breakfast was held to recognize 12 Lee Company University instructors and more than 80 students enrolled in the Lee Company University. Lee Company employees received breakfast at the job site.
Texas
Lincoln College of Technology in Grand Prairie invited industry representatives to speak with students, held resume building workshops, conducted practice interviews, and hosted a student social.
Becon Construction in Rockdale provided career information and sponsored construction site tours for four local high schools.CCC Group presented the BYF video to building and construction trades classes at Southside High School and Harlandale High School in San Antonio. The video was followed by a question and answer session. Nearly 200 students participated.
Vermont Associated General Contractors of Vermont and Vermont Technical College hosted a Construction Career Day in Randolph. Activities included hands-on events, such as concrete cutting and heavy equipment demonstrations, with an emphasis on safety. More than 500 attended
Washington, D.C. Associated General Contractors of America co-sponsored the Festival of the Building Arts at the National Building Museum. Participants took part in hands-on activities such as constructing a giant pipe sculpture during this celebration of our built environment. Children were given posters and plastic hard hats. . |
